Toothache: causes, relief and when to see a dentist
दांत में दर्द
A toothache can be a dull ache, sharp pain when biting, or throbbing that keeps you awake. It is your tooth's way of saying something needs attention.
Common signs
- Pain when chewing or biting
- Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers
- Throbbing pain, often worse at night
- Swelling around the tooth or face
Common causes
- Tooth decay (cavities)
- A cracked or broken tooth
- Infection at the root (abscess)
- Gum disease
- A wisdom tooth coming through
What you can do at home
- Rinse with warm salt water
- Take a painkiller you normally use, as directed on the pack
- Use a cold compress on the cheek for swelling
- Avoid very hot, cold or sweet food on that side
- Never put a tablet directly on the gum
Home care can ease symptoms, but it doesn't fix the cause.
