The problem

When decay or a crack reaches the soft nerve inside a tooth, it becomes inflamed or infected. That causes the deep, throbbing pain many people know as a toothache.

The treatment

Root canal treatment removes the infected nerve, cleans and seals the inside of the tooth, and then protects it, usually with a crown. You keep your own tooth instead of losing it.

What happens, step by step

  1. An examination and X-ray to confirm the problem.
  2. Local anaesthesia, so the area is numb.
  3. The infected nerve is removed and the canals are cleaned and sealed.
  4. A filling or crown protects the tooth for the long term.

Recovery

Mild soreness for a day or two is normal and settles with simple painkillers. Avoid chewing hard food on that side until the final crown or filling is placed.

Every case is different. Dr. Deepshikha will explain what applies to you after a check-up.

Root Canal Treatment: your questions

Does root canal treatment hurt?

It is done under local anaesthesia, so most patients feel pressure, not pain. It actually relieves the toothache.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Back teeth usually need a crown, because a treated tooth can become brittle. Dr. Deepshikha will advise what your tooth needs.
